The bathtub is a necessity in almost all types of bathrooms. But one of the biggest problems of using a bathtub is in keeping it clean. Hard water stains, soap scum, and dirt all make the bathtub very dirty and sometimes even gross! To properly clean your bathtub, you must first understand the needs of your surface type.

Here are the tips you need to clean your bathtub.

Porcelain

Porcelain is a very strong and durable material that is widely used today in making bathtubs and sinks. The main advantage of using porcelain is that it is comparatively easy to clean.

While cleaning a porcelain bathtub, remember not to use very rough and abrasive cleaning products as they can chip the surface of the tub. Similarly, do not use white vinegar and other harsh chemicals for cleaning a porcelain bathtub as it can affect the finish of the tub. Before selecting a cleaning product, check whether it is safe to use it for porcelain bathtub.

The simple way to clean a porcelain bathtub is to make a mixture of dish soap and water and apply it to the tub’s surface with a sponge. Gently scrub and clean it. If you’re a fan of lemon oil, rub some onto the surface to add a shininess to the tub.

Acrylic

The great thing about acrylic bathtubs is that they are durable and more economical, hence their popularity today. These tubs are made of acrylic sheets and are then reinforced using fiberglass. The main advantage of using acrylic bathtub is its availability in a range of colors, sizes, and shapes, making it simple to match it to your décor. However, this surface is soft, which means it is easy to damage. Needless to say, you should never use abrasive materials for cleaning them.

Instead, rinse the bathtub very well with warm water. Take baby shampoo on a damp rag and apply it to the entire bathtub using a circular motion. Rinse the tub and repeat the cleaning process until the bathtub is completely clean. When you are done, apply car wax in a circular motion all over the tub to ensure that the soap, shampoo, and water do not get stuck to the surface of the tub.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass bathtubs are made of layers of polyester resin, fiberglass reinforcement, and surface coat. The main disadvantage to using a fiberglass bathtub is that it is less durable when compared to other bathtubs. The finish of the bathtub also fades because of constant use.

To clean this surface, make a paste of baking soda, dish soap and water. Apply the paste onto the surface of the tub and allow it to stand for about 30 minutes. After the half hour, scrub the surface neatly to clean all the dirt. Finally, rinse the tub with water.

Cast Iron

Cast iron bathtubs are coated with enamel, which makes them more expensive and durable than other bathtubs. The thick enamel coating on the bathtub protects it from chipping and cracking. Remember, however, not to use harsh chemicals on the bathtub. Baking soda and water are the right ingredients to keep the tub looking clean for a long time.

To clean simple stains from the bathtub, make a mixture of baking soda and water and apply it to the surface. Let it sit for 30 minutes then scrub the mixture with a cleaning towel and rinse thoroughly.

Cleaning a bathtub is a lot simpler than most people think it is.  The key is to avoid using harsh chemicals, and your bathtub will last for years to come.
